Maryland Broadband Cooperative Picks Ciena for Statewide Middle-Mile Network

Maryland Broadband Cooperative selected Ciena to upgrade its 2,500-mile statewide fiber network with advanced 400G transport technology, expanding high-speed connectivity across Maryland’s underserved and rural communities. The enhanced middle-mile network will support more than 80 member organizations, including internet service providers, utilities, healthcare facilities, universities, and government agencies. MdBC leaders said the investment will improve broadband reliability, digital inclusion, economic development, education, telehealth, and public safety, while positioning the network to meet Maryland’s long-term connectivity needs.
